Disc brakes have become the standard for cyclist and there’s reasons why. Bike disk brakes have more consistent stopping power no matter what weather conditions you’re riding in. It can be in the rain, in the mud, the snow, or even the heat, your braking power will be consistent throughout all of it. Unlike rim brakes, this braking system doesn’t wear down your rims which in turn means that your wheels will last longer.

Cycle Lab stocks a wide range of disc brake systems. We carry trusted brands like SRAM and Shimano ranging from 140mm rotors all the way up to 203mm rotors. Smaller rotors generally are better suited to road and gravel bikes where a weight saving is more important. Whereas the larger rotors are better suited to mountain bikes and e-bikes.

If you’re ever unsure what bike disc brakes you need, a good guideline would be that the bigger the rotor, the more braking force you’ll have. A bigger rotor also dissipates heat better than a smaller rotor and it also prevents the brakes from fading when going down the longer descents. A bigger rotor also better for a heavier bike so that your braking distance will remain the same as if you were riding a lighter bike.

Not all bike disc brakes are the same as some of them use slightly different mounting styles. The two types that you get would be the centre lock and 6 bolt variants. These are just the two different types of mounting styles that you get for the many different hubs that are available on the market

Disc brakes do need some looking after to keep them working properly. Rotors wear down over time and brake pads need regular checking, especially if you ride in wet or gritty conditions. The good news is replacement parts are affordable and easy to get hold of.
