If you’re riding with a dirty chain, you’re losing money, speed and maybe your cycling friends.

You have the cool frame, groupset, wheels, and all the best gear, but one thing that is often overlooked is the state of you bicycle chain that connects the power generated by your legs to the rear wheel to propelling you forward. Your bikes’ chain constantly roll over the gears which are metal and this metal-on-metal contact creates friction. Added to this friction there can be additional dirt, grit and dust which sticks to a dirty chain making matters worse. We know that chains don’t last forever but keeping the chain clean and lubricated can extend the life not only of the chain but also the entire bike’s drivetrain. Chainrings and cassette sprockets are expensive and it is prudent to ensure your chain is clean and lubricated to extend the live on all these parts. In addition to the monetary benefits there is also the efficiency and that will improve which results in higher speeds obtained for the same power requirements and who does not want some free speed? Lastly, on a group ride few things are as annoying as a squeaking chain and no one wants to listen to that sound continuously so, don’t be surprised if your cycling friends avoid riding close to you. They’re sending you signals that it’s time for you to start using bicycle chain lube.

A dry bicycle chain lube works best for riding in dry conditions use a clean-running lubricant like Muc-off dry lube. Wet weather is more taxing on chains and cycle chain lube and is the ultimate test for even the best lubricant, Herschell wet chain 2.0 is the ideal cycle chain lube for these conditions. A wet lubricant dispels water but can collect more grime so it is recommended to clean your chain after every ride in the rain.

When to use: There is no specific guide for exactly how often re-lubing should take place but you can use the below as a rough guide. Riding conditions are the main considerations for when and frequency of use. If you’re mainly riding in dry on road conditions, your chain can be cleaned and re-lubricated every 300 – 400km, but gravel dusty condition drops these intervals to around 150 – 200km. The lifespan of the lubrication can vary greatly; we recommend listening to your bike and when the chain starts to sound or feel dry it is time to clean and re-apply.

At Cycle Lab we offer a wide range of quality bicycle chain lube for different riding conditions.
