The first, and most common, type of bicycle carrier is going to be the hang on type. If the budget is your number one concern, the hang on style is generally the most affordable option. The bicycle carrier mounts to the tow ball on the car and the bike is then hung onto the carrier on its frame or there is the strap on variants for the cars that don’t have tow balls fitted
The second most popular bicycle carrier would be the platform variant. This bicycle carrier is also mounted to the tow ball of your car. However, the way the bicycle is mounted to the carrier is slightly different. There are grooves on the platform that the tyres of the wheels get strapped into and then a clamp is places onto the frame to hold the bicycle in place.
The last option of bicycle carrier would be the roof mounted option. This style of bicycle carrier is bolted to the roof of your car, so it is not as easy to remove than the other styles of bicycle carriers. This option is like the platform bicycle carrier option with the way that it holds the bicycle in place, but it frees up your tow ball if you’re wanting to take a trailer camper etc. when going on holiday or to an event
